Victorian Townhouse Front Garden

This front garden to a handsome Victorian Townhouse previously did not do justice to the architecture. My client wanted to neaten it up, removing the jumble of paving materials and overgrown plants. They also wanted to grow more sun loving plants than they can in their small north facing rear garden and to have a small seating space to enjoy them.

Cutting out all of the bamboo allowed us to insert a narrower yew hedge and move the bin store back a little. On the opposite side, the struggling hedge was replaced with another evergreen hedge, but this time one that is both flowering and scented.

In the remaining space, a circular planting bed will soon fill out with vibrant orange and pink perennials set against varied evergreen shrubs and a giant grass. In the springtime, pink and orange tulips will pick up the theme.

A ground level bed curves around the new seating area, planted with more evergreen grasses interplanted with frothy umbelliferous perennials. Over the lightwell wall, in new planters, more dwarf grasses are interplanted with bright pink perennials again to pick up the planting from the main circle. An apple tree underplanted with beautiful trailing oregano completes the scene.

The paving was entirely replaced with new clay pavers laid on a permeable sub base so that all of the rain goes back into the ground, saving the ancient London sewers and creating better soil conditions for the planting.
